Where the wastewater disappears to

When you flush your toilet, wash dishes or laundry, bathe and the like, the water used travels down the pipes, out of your home or building, and through a gravity sewer service line or a grinder pump and pressure sewer service line to the sewer main line running along the right of way of the street. This wastewater system is connected to lift stations, creating a reliable process that processes all wastewater in a treatment facility, which returns clean water to the environment. It is crucial to consider what is put into the sewer system through your drains so that unsuitable or hazardous waste does not cause blockages and pollution.

Protecting your health and the waterways

Baldwin County is well known for its diversity of water. Over one-fifth of the county is covered by a river, lake, bay, or stream. Millions of gallons are pumped out of the ground every day for your drinking and bathing water. Water is our most precious resource and needs our protection. Failing septic systems are third most common source of groundwater contamination, which is a problem that we are trying to help eliminate. We offer property owners alternative options within our sewer service territory, in addition to educating them on how to maintain their septic systems to prevent issues. A great resource on septic systems is The Environmental Protection Agency’s Septic Smart site.

In addition, the available low pressure system allows homes to be sited in delicate environments, such as high water tables, without compromising surrounding water quality. By transporting wastewater up to two miles horizontally or up to 140 feet vertically, grinder pumps move wastewater away from pristine shorelines, underground aquifers and other sensitive natural areas.

The health of our rivers, streams and bays greatly impacts the property values and desirability of Baldwin County. Public sanitary sewer is better for overall water quality than septic tank systems. This includes the water you drink, swim and fish in. With that in mind, Baldwin County Sewer Service is offering incentives for residents and businesses to connect to our sewer system in environmentally sensitive areas. The BCSS Environmental Enhancement Program (EEP) offers reduced tap and grinder pump fees for those switching from a septic system to sanitary sewer service and also for new construction in areas that are unsuitable for septic tanks within a quarter mile of a body of water.
