Taking Care of the Environment
Public sanitary sewer is better for overall water quality than septic systems. This includes the water you drink, swim and fish in. Think about it. The public water systems of Baldwin County pump drinking water out of the ground. Septic tanks separate the solids out of sewage and put untreated liquid sewage back into the ground for the earth to cleanse. In some places, it works. In low lying areas, untreated sewage goes right into the ground water and leaches into our streams and rivers. On the contrary, our system transports wasteater away from the waterways to treatment plants that return clean water to the environment. The remaining sludge has been approved by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) to be used as organic fertilizer for corn that is ultimately fed to various farm animals. Therefore, all waste collected by BCSS is given back to the environment by ecologically sound methods.
